Impact of crude distillation unit model accuracy on refinery production planning

摘要: In this work, we examine the impact of crude distillation unit (CDU) model errors on the results of refinery-wide optimization for production planning or feedstock selection. We compare the swing cut+ bias CDU model with a recently developed hybrid CDU model (Fu et al., 2016). The hybrid CDU model computes material and energy balances, as well as product true boiling point (TBP) curves and bulk properties (e.g., sulfur % and cetane index, and other properties). Product TBP curves are predicted with an average error of 0.5% against rigorous simulation curves. Case studies of optimal operation computed using a planning model that is based on the swing cut+ bias CDU model and using a planning model that incorporates the hybrid CDU model are presented. Our results show that significant economic benefits can be obtained using accurate CDU models in refinery production planning.

Enterprise-wide optimization of integrated planning and scheduling for refinery-petrochemical complex

摘要: This paper focuses on the integrated problem of long-term planning and short-term scheduling in a large-scale refinery-petrochemical complex, and considers the overall manufacturing process from the upstream refinery to the downstream petrochemical site. Different time scales are incorporated from the planning and scheduling subproblems. At the end of each discrete time period, additional constraints are imposed to ensure material balance between different time scales. Discrete time representation is applied to the planning subproblem, while continuous time is applied to the scheduling of ethylene cracking and polymerization processes in the petrochemical site. An enterprise-wide mathematical model is formulated through mixed integer nonlinear programming. To solve the problem efficiently, a heuristic algorithm combined with a convolutional neural network (CNN), is proposed. Binary variables are used as the CNN input, leading to the integration of a data-driven approach and classical optimization by which a heuristic algorithm is established. The results do not only illustrate the detailed operations in a refinery and petrochemical complex under planning and scheduling, but also confirm the high efficiency of the proposed algorithm for solving large-scale problems.

Multiple input self-organizing-map ResNet model for optimization of petroleum refinery conversion units

摘要: This work introduces a deep-learning network, i.e., multi-input self-organizing-map ResNet (MISR), for modeling refining units comprised of two reactors and a separation train. The model is comprised of self-organizing-map and the neural network parts. The self-organizing-map part maps the input data into multiple two-dimensional planes and sends them to the neural network part. In the neural network part, residual blocks enhance the convergence and accuracy, ensuring that the structure will not be overfitted easily. Development of the MISR model of hydrocracking unit also benefits from the utilization of prior knowledge of the importance of the input variables for predicting properties of the products. The results show that the proposed MISR structure predicts more accurately the product yields and properties than the previously introduced self-organizing-map convolutional neural network model, thus leading to more accurate optimization of the hydrocracker operation. Moreover, the MISR model has smoother error convergence than the previous model. Optimal operating conditions have been determined via multi-round-particle-swarm and differential evolution algorithms. Numerical experiments show that the MISR model is suitable for modeling nonlinear conversion units which are often encountered in refining and petrochemical plants.

Lessons learned from developing and implementing refinery production scheduling technologies

摘要: An increasing number of novel and highly specialized computer-aided decision-making technologies for short-term production scheduling in oil refineries has emerged and evolved over the past two decades, thereby encouraging refiners to permanently rethink the way the refining business is operated and managed. In this report, we discuss the key lessons learned from one of the pioneering, yet daring, enterprise-wide programs entirely implemented in an energy company devoted to developing and implementing an advanced refinery production scheduling (RPS) technology, i.e., the RPS system of Petrobras. Apart from mathematical and information technology issues, the long-term sustainability of a successful RPS project is, we argue, the outcome of a virtuous cycle grounded on permanent actions devoted to improving technical education inside the organization, reinspecting organizational cultures and operational paradigms, and developing working processes.

Estimation and optimization operation in dealing with inflow and infiltration of a hybrid sewerage system

摘要: Inflow and infiltration of a sewage system was estimated by synthetic model. Homological feature of catchments was recognized by self-organizing map. Occurrence risk index was proposed to assess catchment operation problem. Optimal strategy was used to reduce surcharge events and improve effluent quality. Inflow and infiltration (I/I) are serious problems in hybrid sewerage systems. Limited sewerage information impedes the estimation accuracy of I/I for each system catchment because of its unknown distribution. A new method proposed to deal with I/I of a large-scale hybrid sewerage system with limited infrastructure facility data is presented in this study. The catchment of representative pump stations was adopted to demonstrate the homological catchments that have similar wastewater fluctuation characteristics. Homological catchments were clustered using the self-organizing map (SOM) analysis based on long-term daily flow records of 50 pumping stations. An assessment index was applied to describe the I/I and overflow risk of representative pump stations in the catchment based on the hourly wastewater quality and quantity data. The potential operational strategy of homological catchments was generated by the assessment index of representative pump stations. The simulation results of the potential operational strategy indicated that the optimized operation strategy could reduce surcharge events and significantly improve the quality of wastewater treatment plant effluent.

Refinery production scheduling toward Industry 4.0

摘要: Understanding the holistic relationship between refinery production scheduling (RPS) and the cyber-physical production environment with smart scheduling is a new question posed in the study of process systems engineering. Here, we discuss state-of-the-art RSPs in the crude-oil refining field and present examples that illustrate how smart scheduling can impact operations in the high-performing chemical process industry. We conclude that, more than any traditional off-the-shelf RPS solution available today, flexible and integrative specialized modeling platforms will be increasingly necessary to perform decentralized and collaborative optimizations, since they are the technological alternatives closer to the advanced manufacturing philosophy.

Integrated Optimization and Management of Mining Engineering—Coordinative Operation and Optimal Management

摘要: In the view of engineering philosophy, the mining engineering is a dynamic operating process of ferrous material flow, in which the ferrous material flow is processed orderly through a series of continual coordinated procedures. It is also a process of discarding the dross, selecting the essential, and extracting the original metal. The object of management is to fulfill the multi-objective optimization. The proportion of lean ores in iron ore resources is 82% in the world and even 97% in China but their utilization is very low. Aiming at the bottleneck and weakness of China’s resource development, this paper analyzes and plans the mining engineering system as a whole based on the ideas and methods of system theory and engineering philosophical thinking. And the paper proposes the “grade decision-based multi-system integration” engineering management mode, which considers the relationship between engineering and environment and complies with the natural law. In the mode, the mining engineering, including geologic mining, ore blending, concentration and pelleting, can be viewed as a whole and the geological grade, mined ore grade, feed grade, concentrate grade and feed grade of blast furnace can be considered comprehensively. The mode reflected the overall structural optimization idea, realized the analysis, coordination and optimization among the multiple functions and processes, and thus drove the overall efficient and profit optimization throughout the processing flow. The establishment and the application of the “grade decision-based multi-system integration” mode have solved the lean iron ores exploitation problem and supported the “self-sufficiency” resource strategy.

Energy-saving operation approaches for urban rail transit systems

摘要: With the accelerated urbanization in China, passenger demand has dramatically increased in large cities, and traffic congestion has become serious in recent years. Developing public urban rail transit systems is an indispensable approach to overcome these problems. However, the high energy consumption of daily operations is an emerging issue due to increased rail transit networks and passenger demands. Thus, reducing the energy consumption and operational cost by using advanced optimization methodologies is an urgent task for operation managers. This work systematically introduces energy-saving approaches for urban rail transit systems in three aspects, namely, train speed profile optimization, utilization of regenerative energy, and integrated optimization of train timetable and speed profile. Future research directions in this field are also proposed to meet increasing passenger demands and network-based urban rail transit systems.

Heat Integration retrofit analysis—an oil refinery case study by Retrofit Tracing Grid Diagram

摘要: Heat Integration has been established over the last decades as a proven chemical engineering methodology. Two design implementations are often used in the industry: grassroots and retrofit. Although various methods have been developed for retrofit, it still needs more development to ensure simultaneously thermodynamic feasibility and economic viability. In this paper, a novel graphical approach has been developed to facilitate the understanding of the current situation and scope of improvement. The Retrofit Tracing Grid Diagram presents all streams and heat exchangers in temperature scale and the heat exchangers are clearly separated from each other, enabling clear visualisation of the current state. The tool incorporates the previously developed Cross-Pinch Analysis as well as path approach for retrofit. Additionally, the non-vertical heat transfer can be evaluated. The application of the developed tool has been validated on an oil refinery case study. The applicability of the tool is evident as it can reveal additional options for modification that none of the previous methods considered.

Optimization of urban bus operation frequency under common route condition with rail transit

摘要: The overlap of bus and rail transit routes is common in China. This overlap provides passengers multiple choices for one trip. However, the availability of multiple options would cause uncertainty in the travel distribution of passengers. Given that buses and rail transits are becoming increasingly common, this paper aims to present the overlapped operation condition of bus and rail transit using a bi-level model from the perspective of bus operators. Frequency optimization model is established in the upper-level model. A heuristic algorithm called shuffled complex evolution (SCE-UA) method is used to solve the established frequency optimization model, and three other heuristic methods are compared with SCE-UA. A lower-level Logit model based on Agent simulation is set for traffic mode split. Data on the transit system in Dalian city are chosen as an example to test the feasibility of the model and the algorithm. Results show that as the overlapped optimization of bus route and rail transit routes changed primary bus frequency, the use of SCE-UA to solve such problems has evident advantages and feasibility; furthermore, changed bus frequency would improve bus operations.

Robust train speed trajectory optimization: A stochastic constrained shortest path approach

摘要: Train speed trajectory optimization is a significant issue in railway traffic systems, and it plays a key role in determining energy consumption and travel time of trains. Due to the complexity of real-world operational environments, a variety of factors can lead to the uncertainty in energy-consumption. To appropriately characterize the uncertainties and generate a robust speed trajectory, this study specifically proposes distance-speed networks over the inter-station and treats the uncertainty with respect to energy consumption as discrete sample-based random variables with correlation. The problem of interest is formulated as a stochastic constrained shortest path problem with travel time threshold constraints in which the expected total energy consumption is treated as the evaluation index. To generate an approximate optimal solution, a Lagrangian relaxation algorithm combined with dynamic programming algorithm is proposed to solve the optimal solutions. Numerical examples are implemented and analyzed to demonstrate the performance of proposed approaches.

Multimodal processes optimization subject to fuzzy operation time constraints: declarative modeling approach

摘要: We present an extension of the resource-constrained multi-product scheduling problem for an automated guided vehicle (AGV) served flow shop, where multiple material handling transport modes provide movement of work pieces between machining centers in the multimodal transportation network (MTN). The multimodal processes behind the multi-product production flow executed in an MTN can be seen as processes realized by using various local periodically functioning processes. The considered network of repetitively acting local transportation modes encompassing MTN’s structure provides a framework for multimodal processes scheduling treated in terms of optimization of the AGVs fleet scheduling problem subject to fuzzy operation time constraints. In the considered case, both production takt and operation execution time are described by imprecise data. The aim of the paper is to present a constraint propagation (CP) driven approach to multi-robot task allocation providing a prompt service to a set of routine queries stated in both direct and reverse way. Illustrative examples taking into account an uncertain specification of robots and workers operation time are provided.

聚乙烯生产过程操作优化知识库设计与实现 Article

摘要:

构建聚乙烯生产过程领域知识库,形成可复用的生产知识,有助于提升化工行业的智能制造水平。本文结合聚乙烯生产工艺特点,根据实际生产操作需求,设计了知识库的总体结构。引入本体作为聚乙烯生产过程领域知识表示和共享的载体,使用七步法对聚乙烯生产过程进行本体建模,构建了包含知识本体和推理分析的本体库;建立操作条件和分子量分布(MWD)之间的BP神经网络模型,进行MWD的预测;采用差分进化算法对MWD进行优化,实现对操作参数的优化。以MYSQL数据库作为后台支撑数据库,结合Java语言对知识库系统进行设计和开发,实现了基于Browser/Server框架的聚乙烯生产过程操作优化知识库系统。在实际工业应用中,初步验证了该知识库能够满足聚乙烯生产过程操作优化和管理的功能需求,并具有推广到其他化工生产应用场景的价值。
